– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – hi gang — i’m still around and doing the program more rigorously than ever, but my current struggle to hold the line and get 2 nasty pounds off of my belly seems to be a solitary quest. 6 degrees in ocean city, new jersey, bucking 30 mph winds on the newly-reopened longport bridge. 8 degrees in new york with bitter canyon-effect gusts. and at the same time, working furiously on the committee for jewish environentalism mail_list on, of all things, global warming. a bitter chill and even more bitter irony. and the insane news coming over the wire… health secretary tommy thompson still holding to the personal virtue line on getting people to eat right and exercise more; an epidemic of weight-related diabetes in new york (8% of the population, double that in the poor neighborhoods) and the times declaring that there is no "proven method" to get people to eat right and exercise. wacky stuff. where is hunter thompson when you need him? fear and loathing at the bathroom scale. and yet i scoot on. btw the menu at chez suzette, madam gee’s jazz club, has added a smoked trout appetizer. 2 oz with capers, minced onion, and lettuce, fabulously delicious, only 1 point! —andy the schismatic 248/176/287

fabulous! people in cities all over the world are wacking themselves over the head, wondering why they took out the street cars (the original name for "light rail") in the first place. especially los angeles. that turned out to be a bribery case on the part of goodyear, which wanted to sell more car tires. it used to be you could go from north of boston to south of washington by street car; 5 cents for the first fare and then a 3 cent transfer at each intermediary system. i frequently put the scooter on the PATH train to new jersey, and i may go multi-mode with SEPTA in philadelphia this spring. —a the s

If it happens, I’ll probably be scooting to and from the light rail. And you’ve been my inspiration for that idea.
