Ouch! Black Toe Nails. . .
Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Re: Why did my toenails turn black? What can I do? 1. Buy shoes 1/2 size larger to give more toe room. You’ll need to go narrower. I went from a 9-1/2D to a 10B. 2. Trimming your toenails might help a little. 3. People say putting Vasaline on your toes helps, but it never helped me. 4. After 14 years and 16 Marathons, I’ve almost got the problem licked with a combination of item 1. above, and the following technique. I buy the little Dr. Scholls things for people who have corns on their feet. Its like a rubber donut. I put ‘em on each toe. I tape ‘em in place so they don’t rub off. They have a little donut hole where the toenail goes, so the toenail gets no pressure. Generic store brand costs less and does the job just as well.
I’m relatively new but I’ve found that wide toe and soft suede front models help.
Response:
Bigger shoes and fatter socks. Grease helps. If your toes hit the top of the sneaker, SOME people make slits (lengthwise, toe to heel dir) in the nylon or suede. Had a bad toe once, have a pair of sneaks with the toes completely cut off, another pair with major slits. Black toe is a drag, keep trimming it. I used tea tree oil to disinfect and keep fungus away. Sounds gross, but I also scooped out gunk from under nail and applied tea tree oil. Keep it dry too. DPM thought I was gonna lose the nail, but it healed just fine, no probs.

I got black toenails from trying this one time. I now stick with thin socks and find that works for me. I guess I could go up 1/2 size in shoes and try the thick socks again, but I staying with what works for now.

Hey there! There’s a terrible movie I rented this summer "On the Edge" about a 40 year old guy training to win this race, the movie is not that good but you can play the movie, and turn on your CD player and listen to Chariots of Fire or else… Good topic to look into. Make sure you post your findings!!!! Happy Trails Jordi

I’m trying to come up with a list of movies related to running. So far, I have been able to find the following in the stores/elsewhere/from ‘rec.running’: *list snipped* ANy update on this list would be appreciated.
Although it is less about running than the title might suggest, one of the best movies (of any kind) I have ever seen is "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner". It is an British movie made in the 60’s, in glorious black and white, and stars Tom Courtney. You may have a difficult time finding it, but if anybody else sees it (or has seen it), I’d like to hear what you think of it. Keith

Sorry but you forgot the Australian movie on the battle of Gallipolli starring a young Mel Gibson. Thought it was a really good movie. Unfortunately he did not run fast enough. Wouter

my toe nails on both big toes have turned black. I suspect that I’ll lose them both. This has never happened to me before.
As some people mentioned it can be from your shoes being too small, you can also get black toenails if your nails are too long. My suggestion for preventing this is to tape your toes with white first aid tape, and then vaseline them. Works for me.

I just ran my first marathon. Overall, a fantastic experience. However, my toe nails on both big toes have turned black. I suspect that I’ll lose them both. This has never happened to me before. Why has this happened? What can I do to prevent it from happening next time?
With me, it wasn’t that my shoes were too small, it was that my socks that day were too thick. I was wearing Thorlos. I’ve since gone exclusively to super thin CoolMax socks, and haven’t had an inkling of the problem since. As far as treatment, my podiatrist said that if the nail starts to loosen, shift, or hurt beyond the initial bruising phase, it would be better to have it taken off once and for all instead of waiting. Otherwise, it might rip off at an inopportune time (like in the middle of a long run, when you’re 16 miles away from civilization). Congratulations on your "black toe" badge of courage! Sheri

Not on video? ANy update on this list would be appreciated. – Taranjit

The same thing happened to me only it was it was either a 10K or 5K. The bottom line was my shoes were too small. The store took them back. IT took my toenail approx 3months to fall off but it did grow back. The whole process took about a year.

Okay, this is going to sound gross and painfull but I read it in a book (THE RUNNER’S REPAIR MANUAL I think) and I’ve done it. It doesn’t hurt and it works. First, what you have is a blood blister underneath the toenail. What you will need to do is get a needle or safety pin and boil it for a while to sterilize it. Next… gulp… poke the needle underneath the toenail (where you would cut them) and let the blood and fluid drain. Then, over the next few days, pinch the toenail to your toe so that it maintains it’s hold. Kerry
